Ice cream sundae bars are a great summer treat for all ages. Whether you're looking to serve up a fun treat at your kid's party or build a sign-up sheet for a potluck ice cream social at work, follow this simple guide to make sure your sundae bar hits all the marks!
Ice Cream
Obviously, the first ingredient for any sundae is ice cream. Make sure you have options for any special diets for participants such as dairy-free, kosher, halal, low-fat, etc. Stick to basic flavors like vanilla, chocolate and strawberry since the sundaes will have plenty of topping options.
Sauce
Without a sauce, it’s not a sundae. Include a variety of sauces for a wide range of sundae options. Chocolate, caramel and strawberry are the three classics. If you can accommodate warm toppings, consider adding hot fudge, butterscotch and thicker caramel.
Crunch
Crunchy toppings add flavor and texture to a sundae, with the traditional sundae crunch coming from nuts. If you want to get more creative, try out caramel popcorn, graham cracker pieces, candy-coated chocolate, pretzels or sandwich cookies.
Whipped Cream
If you're doing a full sundae bar, don't forget whipped cream! Alternatively, you can also add marshmallow cream for a gooey topping.
Garnish
The perfect sundae garnish will both look beautiful and add extra flavor or texture to the dessert. Fresh fruit, maraschino cherries, sprinkles, mini marshmallows and candies all work great for that final touch on the perfect sundae.
Tableware
Don't underestimate the importance of having enough tableware to both serve and eat the sundaes. You'll need plenty of bowls and spoons for all the toppings to keep things separate and clean. Don't forget extra ice cream scoops, too. Especially if you have special dietary needs in your group, you'll want separate scoops for each ice cream variety.
Clean Up
Last, but not least, you'll want to have plenty of wet wipes on for easy clean up after building and enjoying the perfect ice cream sundae.
