Tailgate Smarter- Healthy for You

April 18th 2017

A Few Must Have Healthy Tailgate Products

  • Smart Chicken Chicken Wings
  • KC Natural BBQ Sauce
  • Canned Beans (black, red, fat-free refried)
  • Grass-fed Beef
  • Burger Toppings (lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion, mushrooms, avocado, cilantro)
  • Plain Yogurt
  • Beanitos White Bean Chips
  • Black Bean and Corn Salsa
  • Lemons and Limes
  • Fruit and Vegetables (purchase or make a tray full of your favorites)

Stay Active!

  •  Play ball! Throw around the pigskin, play bags or play catch while the grill is heating up. Moving around is a great way to make memories and burn calories!
  • Stay hydrated! Between the salty food and the alcoholic beverages the body is at risk for dehydration. It is better to sip on water instead of guzzling it down. Shoot for at least an 8-ounce bottle every hour of tailgating so you are fully hydrated before you go into the stadium. For every alcoholic beverage you drink, make a point to drink at least 8 ounces of water.

  • Mix in healthy with the unhealthy. Bring all food groups! Please your crew with lots of crazy good choices!

Healthy But Goodies - Try these at your next tailgate.

Wings Over Charcoal

  • Grilled wings are much lower in fat than fried wings. Choose Smart Chicken wings!

  • Go Local Tip: Use KC Natural BBQ Sauce. Find a bottle on the shelves at Price Chopper.

Crockpot Chili

  • Make sure to add beans to get a boost of fiber!

Burgers

  • Go Local Tip: Look for local grass-fed beef in your Price Chopper butcher case.

  • Stick to 4-ounce burger patties to keep portion in check. And bring all the fixin’s, such as lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion, and grilled mushrooms.

7-Layer Dip

  • Use plain yogurt and fat-free refried beans to cut the fat yet keeping the entire flavor.

  • Serve with Beanitos White Bean Chips for more fiber and nutrients.

  • Black Bean and Corn Salsa served with Tortilla Chips

  • Flavor Tip: Buy a jar of black bean and corn salsa, add another can of beans, a can of corn, 1 cup cilantro, lime juice to taste, cumin to taste and garlic powder to taste, and you will have the crowd favorite.

Fruit and Vegetable Trays

  • Purchase or make your own. A fruit or Veggie tray is a quick go to for a game.

No-bake Oatmeal Cookies or Monster Cookies

  • Add some flax seed and choose natural peanut butter and you have a healthy-ish cookie that everyone will love.

Alcoholic Beverages

  • It is about balance. It is never wise to guzzle back one alcoholic drink after another.

  • Opt for one light beer and add a wedge of lemon, or go for a vodka soda (with 0 calorie carbonated water) with half a lime squeezed in for a little boost in vitamin C and a lower calorie option.
