From a basic childhood staple to a more endulgent grown up delight, the grilled cheese is, dare we say, a beloved favorite food. From the bread and butter to the types of cheese, there is no shortage of flavor combos to try. Our mission for #NationalGrilledCheeseDay, find the perfect balance of ooey gooey, melty cheese combined with a taste that we just can’t pass up.
Here are some of our favorite combos. Try with your favorite bread or use our personal favorite, sourdough.
Havarti + Gouda
This was a nice smooth combo. Buttery and creamy flavors. Melted like a dream. Grilled up with Sourdough bread, this one was a favorite with our grilled cheese taste testers.
Swiss & Provolone
Possibly overlooked because they are more firm, swiss and provolone need to be in your grilled cheese rotation. While firm, they are stretchy when melted, but not too runny. We liked this best with a nice wheat bread.
American
Do we need to elaborate? While some may say this is not a cheese, we have to weigh in and just say it. It melts like a dream and is sure to please the pickiest of eaters. Works well with any bread.
Cheddar & Colby Jack
Still airing on the side of basic, but with a little more umph, this combo is a great next step from American. We like it on nice multigrain bread or even a Ciabatta roll.
Muenster &Gruyère
This one got an honorable mention in the creamy category. Both have a creamy texture and melt well. We would definitely make this again. Try them with sourdough.
Pepperjack
If you love things that are spicy, don't look back. Add 2 slices and enjoy. This was our favorite honorable mention for spicy.
Add texture or flavor - Bleu Cheese crumbles or Feta
Neither of these are your typical “melty” cheeses, but they can add some additional texture to your sandwich. A next level approach and one that might help you to keep your sandwich all to yourself.
